Henry’s ball security: Concerning trend or short-term blip? Super Bowl contenders?
The Detroit Lions outlasted the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football, 38–30, behind a record-breaking performance from their backfield duo, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
Dubbed “Sonic and Knuckles” for Gibbs’ speed and Montgomery’s power, the pair combined for 218 rushing yards and four touchdowns. It marked the 11th time both backs have scored in the same game — an NFL record.
Montgomery delivered late-game haymakers — including a 72-yard burst and a pivotal 31-yard TD — on his way to a career-high 151 rushing yards (12 carries, two TDs). Gibbs added two rushing scores, plus five catches for 32 yards. Per the NFL, it’s the first time two Lions teammates each had multiple rushing TDs in a game since Dutch Clark and Ernie Caddell in 1936.
Jared Goff on the duo: “Pick your poison… them being able to be fresher than a back that’s taking 25–30 carries is kind of the secret sauce.”
The game was a shootout, tied 21–21 entering the fourth. Detroit then marched 96 yards in nine plays to take the lead. A Derrick Henry fumble — his third in three games, unusual for the typically sure-handed star — stalled Baltimore’s comeback. The Lions tacked on a field goal and a long TD drive to go up 14 before a late Ravens score narrowed the final margin.
Although Lamar Jackson tossed three TDs (two to Mark Andrews, one to Rashod Bateman), the Ravens’ vaunted rushing attack was held to just 85 yards on 19 attempts. For Detroit, it felt like a statement win from a team with real Super Bowl ambitions. For Baltimore (now 1–2), it’s another setback against a heavyweight ahead of a Week 4 trip to face the Kansas City Chiefs.
