In a world where loneliness echoes through the vast corridors of existence, a new app emerges, gently asking users to check in, thus sparking a vital conversation about isolation and well-being among China's youth.

A new smartphone app in China, originally called “Are You Dead?” (Chinese: Sileme, 死了么), has gone viral by addressing worries about loneliness and safety among people who live alone.

The app works by requiring users to check in on a schedule (often daily or every couple of days) to confirm they are okay. If a user misses check-ins for a set period, the app automatically alerts an emergency contact so someone can follow up.

Its blunt, darkly humorous name has fueled debate online: some people find it unsettling or inappropriate, while others say it reflects a real problem in a memorable way.

The app climbed high in China’s Apple App Store charts in early January 2026, drawing attention to the growing number of one-person households and the broader social issues that come with isolation.

The developers, a small independent team, said they raised the price slightly to cover costs and plan to rebrand for international users under a new name, “Demumu.”
