What is the CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the standard six-level scale used worldwide to describe how well someone knows a language: A1 and A2 (beginner), B1 and B2 (intermediate), C1 and C2 (advanced). It isn't tied to any one exam, country, or even language — it's a shared reference point used by schools, employers, and language platforms everywhere, including ImChatty.

What the placement test covers

ImChatty's CEFR placement test is adaptive: it starts at A1 and moves you up a level at a time as you answer correctly, testing vocabulary, grammar, and reading. It stops as soon as it finds your level, so most people are done in well under 15 minutes.

How your level is used

Once you've been placed, your CEFR level shows as a badge on your profile and helps match you with practice partners and tutors at the right level — not too easy, not overwhelming. You can retake the test any time after 30 days if you've improved.

Why check your level before you start chatting

Knowing your CEFR level up front means you spend less time in conversations that are either too basic to be useful or too advanced to follow. It also gives tutors a starting point instead of guessing where to begin.

Common questions

Is this an official CEFR certification? No. This is a free self-assessment that follows the same six-level framework, not an accredited exam. It's meant to get you matched with the right practice level quickly, not to produce a certificate.

How is it scored? The test is adaptive — it moves you up as long as you're answering correctly, and settles on the highest level you clearly pass.

Can I retake it? Yes, anytime 30 days after your last attempt, from Settings → Certifications.
