Practice for TOEFL iBT Speaking

TOEFL iBT scores you on recorded spoken responses, not a live interview — which makes it harder to rehearse alone. ImChatty gives you real conversation practice and tutor-led sessions built around the actual question types.

What TOEFL iBT actually tests

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) is administered by ETS and is the most widely accepted English test for university admissions in the United States and Canada, alongside growing acceptance elsewhere. It's scored 0–120 across four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — and is taken entirely on a computer.

This isn't the official test

ImChatty doesn't administer the official TOEFL exam or produce a certified ETS score. This page offers free practice and optional tutor-led mock sessions to help you prepare — you'll still need to register for the real test through ETS.

Why Speaking is uniquely hard to self-prepare

Unlike IELTS, TOEFL Speaking isn't a conversation with a live examiner — you speak into a microphone and your response is recorded and scored later. That format is unfamiliar and can feel awkward the first few times, and it includes "integrated" tasks where you have to read or listen to material first and then speak a structured response within a strict time limit. Rehearsing this format cold, on test day, is one of the most common reasons scores fall short of a candidate's real ability.

Where ImChatty fits

Use free conversation practice to build general English fluency and comfort thinking on your feet. Then book a session with a tutor to rehearse TOEFL's actual speaking task types — independent opinion questions and integrated reading/listening-then-speaking tasks — under the same time pressure you'll face on exam day, with feedback on pacing, clarity, and organization.

If you want an independent read on your current level first, ImChatty's free CEFR placement test (A1–C2) takes under 15 minutes and can help you and your tutor set a realistic target score.

Who this is for

  • University applicants targeting US or Canadian programs
  • Candidates who find TOEFL's recorded-response format unfamiliar or stressful
  • Anyone who wants structured practice on integrated speaking tasks
  • Learners who want a level check before committing to a test date

Common questions

Does this replace the official TOEFL test? No. This is free practice plus optional tutor sessions — the official score still comes only from a registered TOEFL iBT test through ETS.

Can a tutor really simulate the recorded format? Yes — sessions can be structured to match TOEFL's timing and task types (independent and integrated speaking), even though the real test records rather than converses live.

How is this different from IELTS prep? TOEFL Speaking is recorded and computer-delivered rather than a live interview, so practice here focuses more on timing, structure, and integrated tasks than free-flowing conversation.

Do I need to know my level first? Not required, but the free CEFR check gives you a useful baseline before booking test-focused tutor sessions.
