Practice for IELTS Speaking and Listening

IELTS is scored on real conversation, not multiple choice. ImChatty lets you build speaking confidence through free chat practice, then book a tutor for a live mock interview that mirrors the actual exam.

What IELTS actually tests

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the two most widely accepted English proficiency exams in the world, used for university admissions, skilled-worker visas, and immigration programs in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and beyond. It's jointly administered by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge, and comes in two versions — Academic (for university study) and General Training (for work and immigration). Every candidate takes four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, scored on a 0–9 band scale.

This isn't the official test

To be clear upfront: ImChatty doesn't administer the official IELTS exam or issue a certified band score. What you'll find here is free conversation practice and an optional live mock speaking session with a tutor — useful preparation, not a substitute for booking through an official IELTS test center.

Why Speaking is the hardest part to prepare for alone

Unlike Reading or Listening, IELTS Speaking is a live, unscripted interview with a real examiner — you can't prepare for it with flashcards or practice tests alone. The examiner assesses fluency, coherence, vocabulary range, grammar, and pronunciation in real time, across three parts: an introduction and general questions, a two-minute individual long turn on a given topic, and a follow-up discussion. The only way to genuinely improve is to have that kind of conversation, repeatedly, with real people.

Where ImChatty fits

Start with free text or voice chat to build comfort speaking English in real time without exam pressure. When you're ready for something closer to the real thing, book a session with an English-speaking tutor for a mock IELTS Speaking interview — timed, structured around the same three-part format, with direct feedback on fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

If you're not sure where your English currently stands, ImChatty's free CEFR placement test gives you an independent read on your level (A1–C2) in under 15 minutes, which is a useful sanity check before you book an official test date.

Who this is for

  • Candidates preparing for IELTS Academic or General Training
  • University applicants who need a target band score
  • Skilled-worker and immigration applicants (UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand)
  • Anyone who wants live speaking practice, not just written drills

Common questions

Does this replace the official IELTS test? No. This is free practice plus optional tutor sessions — you still need to book the official exam through the British Council, IDP, or a Cambridge test center to get a certified band score.

Can I practice Listening here too? Yes, informally, through real conversation — though ImChatty doesn't currently offer a timed IELTS-format listening test.

How is this different from generic English practice? Tutor sessions can be structured around the actual three-part IELTS Speaking format on request, so the practice maps directly onto exam day.

Do I need to know my level first? Not required, but taking the free CEFR check first helps you and your tutor set a realistic target band.
